Online Synonyms Dictionary - Five Valuable Tips You Need to Know

Remember when we used thick, dusty reference books? Those days are gone - now we open our browsers and discover hundreds of online dictionaries, each offering different features and capabilities, leaving us confused!

An online English thesaurus, or an online English synonyms dictionary, is a great tool that helps us to find the most relevant words in our sentences, whether technical terms, "tip-of-our-tongues", or colorful usages that instantly transform our English writing.

By using synonyms, we enrich our English writing, rendering it professional and impressive, in turn transmitting to our readers how intelligent and creative we are. Using synonyms correctly in an otherwise humdrum essay, for example, can transform that text into a descriptive, clear, fun-to-read piece.

Numerous helpful solutions are out there in the internet; however, three components make an English synonyms dictionary valuable and effective. Make sure yours:

(1) Covers your field - Business, legal, medical, creative―whatever. Many thesauri provide only general, limited lists.

(2) It's auto-updated - An online thesaurus ensures that you use fresh terms―essential in our word-intensive world that keeps bringing new terms and phrases almost every day.

(3) Is intuitive and easy to use - Most dictionaries require you to type a word and only then they start searching for synonyms, make sure your solution enables you to click on a word within your existing text and instantly suggest replacements.

(4) It features auto-enrichment capabilities - Auto-enrichment means that the thesaurus automatically

analyzes your text and "understands" the context of each word, thus suggesting only the most suitable

synonyms.

(5) Provides additional English writing features - The more advanced dictionaries provide you with the following features as well: grammar check, automatic text enrichment, punctuation check, proofreading and online spell check.

Online Oxford English Dictionary

The most popular and widely accepted dictionary all over the word is Oxford English dictionary. There were two editions of this earlier and the third one is about to launch. The head of the Oxford university press, Mr Nigel Portwood said that the third edition of the dictionary will only be in electronic form. The online version of the Oxford English Dictionary was a great success and this was the inspiration for them to publish the third edition electronically. The first edition of Oxford English Dictionary was printed in 1928 and in the year 1989 the second edition was printed.

There are many benefits for the online version. The online version is more economic. Usually the printed edition was sold for about nine hundred and ninety-five dollars and the online version is available for two hundred and ninety-five dollars. It is always easy to use your desktop or lap to check the word meaning rather than checking the big book with your hands. The space for keeping the book in your shelf can also be saved if you are subscribing the online version.

There are frequent updates provided to the online version which will not be available in the printed version. The printed version contains the meaning of the word, its usage in the history, the proper pronunciation and the etymology. About eighty lexicographers are working for the third edition of Oxford English dictionary. The revised entries will be updated to the online edition every three months. The Amazon has reported a great hike in the sales on online books. Therefore it is sure that the online dictionary will be accepted wholeheartedly by the language lovers. But still then there are many people who prefer to buy the printed version still sticking to the traditional way of reading. But during the time of power loss everyone will be thinking of having a printed edition of the books.

How To Learn Spanish Online Using A Spanish Dictionary

In this article you will discover how to learn Spanish online using a Spanish dictionary. In my last article, I told you about an American friend who was attempting to express to his new in-laws that he was he was going to support and help his new wife. But he mistakenly said in Spanish that he would "tolerate" his new wife.

That's because he used the phrase "Voy a soportarla." In the Spanish language, the verb "soportar" means to tolerate or to bear. After writing that article, one reader emailed me and said:

"Patrick, it appears that you are using a regional definition of the verb 'soportar.' When I looked in my dictionary the first definition that I saw for the verb 'soportar' is 'to support.'"

In response to that email, I want you to know that a common mistake that many intermediate and advanced students of Spanish make is to continue to use the same dictionary that they used when they first started learning Spanish.

If you want to become fluent in Spanish, then you MUST use a dictionary that is entirely in Spanish. I have several Spanish only dictionaries. The one that I highly recommend is:

Diccionario Esencial de la Lengua Espanola de la Real Academia Espanola (Spanish Edition)

The Real Academia Espanola (Royal Spanish Academy) is the official royal institution that is in charge of managing the Spanish language. Their dictionary is highly regarded by Spanish professors throughout Latin America and Spain.

The definition that I found in the dictionary for the Real Academia Espanola (Royal Spanish Academy) for "soportar" is:

1. Sostener o llevar sobre si una carga o peso.

2. Sufrir (aguantar, tolerar).

Neither definition even remotely resembles the English verb "to support." If I translate the two above Spanish definitions for "soportar" the word means:

1. to sustain, to hold

2. to tolerate

If you want to learn Spanish online, there's no need to pay "dinero" for the Diccionario Esencial de la Lengua Espanola de la Real Academia Espanola. The Real Academia Espanola has an on-line dictionary completely free. You can just Google "Diccionario Esencial de la Lengua Espanola de la Real Academia Espanola" in order to find the URL for their online version of their Spanish dictionary.

Online Dictionaries: A Universe of Words

Everybody needs a dictionary. You may have a tattered family volume, a hardcover dictionary from student days, or a paperback bought at a bargain price. But you don't have to buy a dictionary, you may go online and discover a universe of words and fun.

Looking for a Spanish translation? Go online. Need a defintion for a Cockney word? Go online. Wondering about a Chinese symbol? Go online. Before you visit an online dictionary you need to prepare for the "trip." Grab a cup of coffee or tea, or a glass of water, and a healthy snack, because once you start reading dictionaries you'll be absorbed for hours.

Start with "OneLook Dictionary Search," a fascinating Website with 6,257,269 indexed words from 993 dictionaries. Your options include a basic word search or a "wildcard pattern" search that matches any sequence of letters. The word "bluebird" is used as an example. To find the definition you may enter "blue" or "bird" or "bl (blanks here)rd." There's also a reverse dictionary on the Website. If you enter the phrase "when cancer spreads through the body," for example, dozens of medical words pop up.

"The AlphaDictionary" Website is just plain fun. A word of the day is posted on the site and when I accessed it the word was "glade." You may submit your own word of the day if you're so inclined. If you get bored while you're looking for definitions click on "AlphaDictionary Word Games" and do crossword puzzles and "word jungles."

Cambridge University Press has a Website called "Cambridge Dictionaries Online." You'll find a variety of dictionaries on this site, plus dozens of "Online Activities and Worksheets." I clicked on CLD, activities to do with the "Cambridge Learner's Dictionary," and found an alphabet trivia quiz, collation games that show how words are used together, multiple meanings, verb patterns, information on nouns, verbs, and adjectives, "The Rich and Famous" crossword puzzle, and more.

There's also a list of "The Top 40 Words 2004" on this site. I learned the word "advice" has held its place as number one. According to Cambridge University, "The only change in the top 6 is the fall of 'idiom' from 4th place in 2003 to 17." Like a soccer mom rooting for a small kid on the team, I found myself rooting for "idiom" and hoped it would rise to stardom again.

"The TravLang Translating Dictionaries" Website has dictionaries in more than 35 languages, including Hungarian, Polish, Esperanto, and Turkish. You'll also find an AOL Translator link and an online dictionary on this site. Many foreign language dictionaries, including this one, have ads on them so be prepared.

"Webopedia" (I love the name) is both a dictionary and a search engine for Internet and Technical definitions. I've used it several times and found it user-friendly and concise. You'll find other unusual dictionaries on this site, too: South Asia dictionaries, Biblical dictionaries, Gaelic dictionaries, and more.

You'll want to check out an encompassing Website called "The Internet Public Library." A stop here gets you "Strange and Unsual Dictionaries," "VoyCabulary" (links to Web pages or phrasesto online references like dicitonaries) and even a Chinese Characters Dictionary.

The next time you're stumped by a word, or need a break, or the kids have cabin fever, go on the Internet and visit online dictionaries. You'll have fun, the kids will have fun, and everyone will learn new words and new things. What a deal.

What is a Free Online Dictionary and How it Can Assist You

According to a study, having more words at your disposal allows you to think faster and makes you powerful in discovering new solutions and ideas than ever before. The probability of this can be increased if a source of wisdom i.e. Dictionary is consulted on daily basis.

Generally speaking a dictionary is a collection of words that are often listed in an alphabetical order along with their meanings, definitions, pronunciations, and other information. Nielsen has given a few characteristics and has defined a dictionary as a lexicographical product performing three functions of: 1) being multipurpose; 2) containing data that fulfills the search function; and finally 3) its lexicographic structures establish link with data to meet user needs and fulfilling the function of a dictionary.

Since the inception of an internet age dictionaries that were most commonly found in the form of a book have been transformed into computer aided applications and online web based dictionaries. There are also many free online dictionaries accessible via the web that not only provide with meanings and correct pronunciations but also grammar correction facilities as well. Oxford dictionary that is considered as a benchmark of excellence in providing academic services has an online dictionary service and grammar service where anyone (even a novice) can search entire Oxford dictionary in seconds and also consult experts for grammatical help.

The online resource center of Oxford established for university and higher education students as a resource caters for material for developing writing and research skills. To improve upon the grammar the free online dictionary also supports its readers in imparting know how of sentence structure; for this they have a couple of exemplary sentences for each word that is searched out. Furthermore a hand book or a guide with examples of letters to banks, employers and landlords etc, and top 10 grammar, spelling and punctuation tips will help to further make their expression impressive.

Online Dictionaries are no more just a source of finding synonyms but a lot more of a grammar correction guide to avoid some basic errors and providing helpful hints on how you can avoid some of the more recurrent writing and grammatical mistakes. One other advantage of using this online portal to wisdom and knowledge is that it guides you with tips and some useful phrases for effective letter writing and how plain English can help make your writing more user-friendly and effective.

Using an Online Dictionary As a Writing Resource

It used to be that a writer needed a fixed base. A place to call their own. Not because they actually needed one to write in you understand. What they needed was a place to store their dictionary and thesaurus. After all, carrying a 20-volume copy of the Oxford dictionary was likely to give one a major backache or worse!

But all that has changed!

Writers are no longer tied to their desks and their bookshelves. With the advent of netbooks, tablets and laptops, the portable author can take his bookshelf with him. But even that can be cumbersome as discs go missing and need to be stored in a binder.

The presence of internet hotspots has removed even that restriction. Now the author can find an internet connection in almost any coffee shop. Usually for free.

And that means that online dictionaries are available as a writing resource even for the portable author.

There are many online dictionaries available. Of course, the major dictionaries are all online. Merriam-Webster, Oxford, Collins, Random House. All are available online. In addition, there are a number of other specialist or lesser dictionaries also available. And of course, there are dictionaries that exist solely on the internet. Even Google has a dictionary available.

Most of the online dictionaries also include connections to other related tools such as a thesaurus or an etymological dictionary. Even pronunciation aids and translation aids are available.

Using an online dictionary is very simple. The easiest method is to use Google and the search "define term" where term is the word you wish to define. You'll get a list of dictionaries that you can choose from. For example, if you search "define word" you'll get a list of definitions of the term "word".

But for a writer you may want to use only one dictionary.

My own preference is the Oxford dictionary (not the OED unfortunately) if I am writing for an audience outside the U.S., but Merriam-Webster for an audience within the U.S.

Whichever dictionary you chose the process is remarkably similar.

It begins by signing on to the dictionary's website. Once there, you will normally find a search field. Enter the term you wish to search and press the search button.

Depending on the website, the result will be either a list of alternatives, a combined definition plus other references, or the default reference entry for the website, which is usually a definition.

However, most of the websites also include a menu of different resources. For example, Merriam-Webster has a Dictionary, Thesaurus, Spanish-English dictionary, and Medical Dictionary available. In this case, you can pick the most suitable lexicon.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Online English Dictionary

There are various reliable internet tools such as online English dictionaries, programs for grammar checking, and other processing tools. Besides the convenience, online dictionaries instantly eliminate the limitations of printed reference materials. Many of the users think that they do not need to update their dictionaries often, since the meaning of words does not change.

On the other hand, words and their meanings are dynamic. In fact, language itself, irrespective of what the language is, is ever changing, and this is what the uniqueness of language printed dictionaries cannot accommodate, hence the need for online English dictionaries.

Online English dictionaries are auto-updated; in fact this is the main advantage of online dictionaries over printed ones. An online dictionary is updated easily. It means that every new word or terminology can be added in the database of online dictionary. One of the best qualities of such dictionaries is the translation feature, e.g. an online dictionary can translate an English word into Italian and vice versa. This would be an important tool for learning a foreign language.

Another advantage is of convenience, i.e. just input the word and the website search engine will do the rest of the work. No more spelling check time, no need of any programs for grammar checking, no more wasting time in looking for the correct term and the correct meaning.

One of the drawbacks of these online dictionaries, however, is the dependability of the source. An online dictionary is a great tool of information, especially if we know how to distinguish a good online dictionary from a bad one. Also many of us view online dictionary as supplements to print dictionaries and not a replacement. We often forget that the dictionary gives the meaning of the word. It does not correct the grammar, as is done by the programs used for grammar.

Nevertheless, it remains a fact that online dictionaries are advantageous. Some people may be cautious when it comes to using online dictionaries due to the uncertainty associated with the source. But the millions who use this modern facility act as a pointer that the online dictionaries can be good as the real thing. As a result, the user gets all the rewards s/he deserves from his/her hard work, and nothing less.

Flight Instruction - The Online Aviation Dictionary

This article is one in a series of articles about flight instruction in the United States. Here we examine one of the tools used in most flight instruction curricula, the online aviation dictionary. The beneficiary of such an indispensable tool is the student pilot. But also flight instructors, and even aerospace engineers can realize benefits from this type of dictionary.

The web developer or webmaster, who has been assigned the task of creating an online aviation dictionary, should also find the following information useful. Here we characterize those elements which produce a highly effective dictionary, and we provide a list of good online aviation dictionaries along with a discussion about those dictionaries. So what are the components of a highly effective aviation dictionary?

First and foremost, it should be comprehensive, but not so comprehensive that the student pilot, and flight instructor, must look through many aerospace terms in order to find those terms which are fundamental to flight training. But also, it should be comprehensive enough for the aerospace engineering student, so that at least basic aerospace engineering terms can be found. Therefore, it should have a balance between typical terms found in a flight instruction program, and typical terms used by the aerospace engineer student.

Many believe that a dictionary for aviation should have a search component incorporated. This really depends on it's degree of comprehensiveness. While a search component may be useful to some, many visitors prefer to see terms laid out on a page the same way they are found in a book. So the decision as to whether the dictionary should have a search component really comes down to how many terms are in the aviation dictionary. One which has a very large number of terms probably should have a search component.

It should also be noted that both a dictionary for aviation and an aerospace dictionary should have many common terms. For example, those terms used to describe the force of lift produced by a wing will be found in both of these. But mathematical terms, laws of physics, and theorems used to describe lift may only be found in an aerospace dictionary, or more specifically an aerospace encyclopedia. Another words, a detailed mathematical explanation of the force of lift is not needed in an aviation dictionary.

Also, a dictionary for aviation is not an aviation encyclopedia. An encyclopedia provides a much longer description. Aviation terms can be found in Wikipedia, and a long description is given for these terms. For example the term wing lift in Wikipedia consists of an entire page of information, from a discussion of Newton's Laws to the Kutta-Joukowski theorem. On the other hand, an aviation dictionary should describe wing lift in one or two sentences.

A few other points should made in terms of creating a good online dictionary for aviation. It should consist of images, at least for the most commonly used terms. Also, it can be part of a large aviation site, or exist on it's own as a site. And, if it does not have a search engine, it should be easily navigated so that terms can be found quickly.

Finally, and most importantly, the pages which make up a dictionary for aviation should not be loaded with unnecessary objects and scripts which result in slowing down the loading of the page. There is nothing more annoying to the visitor of any online dictionary then the slow loading of pages. Therefore, it's pages should be light and basic, in order to allow for the quick look up of aviation terms. Word has it that in 2010, Google will be incorporating speed of page loading into their search algorithm. So keeping the page loading speed fast, may in the future help with the all important Google ranking.

Why is this information about the aviation dictionary important? For the builder or developer, it is important to structure the site so that it incorporates the elements presented here. For the student who is within a flight instruction program, it is important to select an aviation dictionary which also incorporates these elements.

The following is a list of popular aviation dictionaries found online:

alphadictionary.com/

aviastar.org/dictionary_eng.html

dictionary.babylon.com/science/aviation

aviationdictionary.org/ datwiki.net/

naa.edu pilotportalusa.atspace.com/aviation_dictionary_a.html

In terms of the those listed above, we found datwiki.net to be very comprehensive, with a fast search engine. Also, babylon.com included a search engine, and language translation capability. AlphaDictionary.com was also highly effective because they incorporate a search of 1065 dictionaries at once when placing a term into their search component. After placement of a search term into their search engine, you get a list of dictionaries which carry the term. The draw back to this method is that it is more time consuming when looking for a definition.

Aviastar.org provides a single page list of terms. Aviationdictionary.org was very comprehensive and had a fast search engine, and had more acronyms then the other online aviation dictionaries. Naa.edu had a good list type dictionary without a search engine, and it appeared very comprehensive, although I think their site would be more professional without the annoying music on their home page. Finally, pilotportalusa.atspace.com/aviation_dictionary_a.html was comprehensive, a list type, with many images.

To conclude, the builder of an aviation dictionary should produce a high level of comprehensiveness, but not to comprehensive, allow for the incorporation of images on each page, make sure each page is easily navigated to all pages of the dictionary, and most importantly, make sure each page loads quickly even for those visitors who must use a slow connection to the Internet. An online aviation dictionary is an integral component of any flight instruction curriculum. Student pilots, flight instructors, aerospace engineers, or anyone who has an interest in aviation, all are beneficiaries of this type of dictionary.

Thomas Sullivan, the author of this article, is a web publisher and developer who lives in the Boston, MA area. He is the creator and webmaster for Aviation Dictionary.

Online Dictionary: Your Source For Greater Knowledge

An online dictionary is very useful for many people. They can be used to look up words in a convenient manner without having to have a heavy bound book lying around. Using an online dictionary is as simple as going to a website and typing in the word. They are also very convenient for people who write for a living or who are responsible for communicating using the written word often in their job. These handy tools are easily accessible and you will not have to step away from the computer to find the printed dictionary. Children and college students will also find a dictionary that is available online quite handy.

An online dictionary is also quite important as it gets updated frequently. As language evolves, dictionaries need to be updated. The dictionary you may have this year may not be complete next year. Technological advances add words to our vocabulary that can not be found in older dictionaries. There are also slang words that evolve and become a part of our vernacular. These items will show up on a regularly updated online dictionary but will not show up in printed dictionaries that are older. Instead of having to buy a new dictionary each year to keep up with changes in language, you can simply use an online version and get the most up to date information available. The same holds true for word meanings. Often a word is used in a new way that begins to catch on. Older printed dictionaries will not have a complete definition of the word, while online versions will.

Dictionaries are used every day by numerous people. Nowadays, people use the computer almost exclusively for all their writing needs. They write term papers, correspond via email or write articles and business documents. The convenience of using an online dictionary is unparallel. You will get the most current words available as well as updated definitions to established words.
