The Modern Dictionary - The Popularity of Slang Terms is on the Rise

It is kind of difficult to ignore some of the words and lingo that can be heard being spoken by high school and college students these days. It seems that they have their own language that no one can understand and it may at times drive parents a little mad. Slang terms have become so popular among youth, that it is all most as if the English language is being rewritten again. It is time to throw out the old dictionary as it will not provide you with any clues about figuring out teen and young adult slang. What you need is a modern dictionary, one that will clue you in on all of the different slang terms that are being used and their exact meanings.

The use of slang terms has become so popular that UCLA has started publishing their own yearly slang dictionary called the Skrilla. While parents and those who do not understand slang language will be glad to get a hold of a copy of the Skrilla, young adults might not feel as empowered if their mom or dad got a hold of the Skrilla or any other slang dictionary.

One of the reasons why slang terms have become increasingly popular among the youth is that it gives them a way to communicate with each other where they can speak their mind but also leave the person overhearing the conversation wondering what in the world they are talking about. Teens and young adults can easily make fun of other people, talk about their boyfriends or girlfriends and use derogatory terms without anyone else finding out what the meaning of the words being used actually means.

Thinking about the Skrilla and other published slang books and websites takes me back to another day in time where the younger generation used what was called gibberish to talk to each other in front of adults or other people that they didn't want to know the full meaning of their conversation. Gibberish was frequently used by switching up vowels and consonants in the words or added sounds at the start or end of words to make them hard to understand when spoken.

When it comes down to it, slang words and terms have been around for decades, if not longer. The big difference and trend now however is that students, adolescents and even some adults are starting to make them public so that anyone can catch on to the lingo. In the end, this means that secretive words, slang and languages may not end up being that secretive after all.

Slang words are a growing niche and they will continue to multiply from generation to generation. To find out more on slang trends, visit http://www.theinternettimemachine.com.
