A dream dictionary is a type of book that--much like a standard dictionary--has a list of things, objects, or images that may appear in a dream. These will be words such as: a car, a house, water, a baby, and so on. This type of dictionary then gives a number of meanings for each word, which are general assumptions about what your dream could mean.
Let's take the example of dreaming about a baby. What if you are not ready to be having a baby? Would such a dream make you nervous or scare you? A dream dictionary may offer meanings such this: If you see a 'baby' in your dream, it could mean:a new life, or that you may get pregnant, etc. At least one of these meanings is supposed to apply to your dream image.
It could be that one of the meanings may ring true, or feel right. Even so, it is unlikely that you will discover the actual message of your dream by using dictionary-type dream interpretation books.
Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, gives this definition: A dream dictionary is a tool made for interpreting images in a dream. However, dream dictionaries are generally not considered scientifically viable by those within the psychology community.
I do agree. Such books do not take into account that you have personal meanings to your own symbolism. Dream symbols are as unique as your fingerprints. The experiences of your waking-day, the things you notice in your reality, are filed in your subconscious mind. These experiences are stored in your memory banks as symbolic images, along with one or more meanings of these images. Your symbols make sense to you and you only.
Most dreams are entirely symbolic. They are created out of your subconscious mind, taken from your storehouse files of your life's experiences, situations, occurrences, etc., and, includes your emotional reactions to them.
A dream-dictionary interpretation may even throw you completely off-track. One isolated, interpreted symbol does not necessarily give you what you need, as the description of one word in a paragraph does not give the meaning of the entire paragraph.
Here is a good example of the point I have been making:
Mary had a dream in which she held a baby in her arms. She had looked up this symbol in a dream dictionary and read that this meant she could have a baby in her future, and/or it meant - a new life. Then Mary met me, and asked me for advice about the dream's meaning. I do not interpret dreams. Instead, I have facilitated thousands of interpretations with dreamers, guiding them through the Dream Decipher process to help them discover their own personal meaning.
In the second column on the Decipher Worksheet, Mary listens to her Voice of Intuition to learn the true meaning of each symbol. After completing this part of the process, Mary learned from her Intuition that this dream-baby meant: Something I have to take care of. But it is something that I don't want to take care of.
By the third column in the Decipher process, she figured out that this dream actually warned her about her new boyfriend. The interpretation told her that he was very needy and he would need to be taken care of.
Mary took this dream warning seriously. She went into observer mode, seeing him with discerning eyes. After several dates, she clearly saw that very needy side of him. Based on her dream warning, she decided this would not be a good relationship for her to be involved in.
When our eyes are blinded by passion, we do not tend to see the true self of the other person. Mary would never have interpreted this dream correctly by believing what the dictionary said. On that basis, she may have made the decision to marry this guy and have his baby. That would have been a big mistake - Mary told me later.
What other options are there besides using a dictionary?
You would be much better off trying to do trial and error guessing through your conscious mind, than to use a dream dictionary book.
However, there is a better way to interpret dreams than by trying to guess your way through them. The intuitive-based, Dream Decipher Process is an easy to use tool that gives an accurate meaning for any dream.
