Finding a Free Dream Interpretation Dictionary

If you want to interpret your dreams then the best place to start is with an interpretation dictionary. However these do cost money if you buy them in a retail store, so is there a way of finding a free interpretation dictionary so that you can interpret your dreams without having to pay?

Before the internet the only way to get an interpretation was through friends and family who knew about them. There seem to be so many different types that it is almost impossible for one person to know them all though. Even so, there are common themes that run through different kinds of dreams which help you to interpret them.

For example if you had a very specific dream where a snake was chasing you through an open field then although you might not be able to find this exact one in a dictionary you would be able to find some that include animals and involve you running away from something. Therefore you can interpret the this one yourself without having to go to a professional interpreter.

So where can you find these free dream interpretation dictionaries? The best place is, of course, the internet. Over the last few years several websites have built up huge databases of dreams and what they could mean in different situations. This makes it easy to find an interpretation for your dream in most cases.

The great thing about the internet is that there are so many people online and sharing their dreams that it is very easy to find someone who has had a similar one as you. Even if you can't find a similar one there are message boards where you can ask people to interpret your specific dream. The only thing to remember is that in most cases anyone can interpret your dream on these websites, so don't expect a single answer. You might have to decide which of the interpretations that you receive suits your dream the best.

With the internet providing many places to find a dream dictionary it has never been easy to find out what your dreams really mean. While you can still buy interpretation books they generally will not be able to cover as wide range of dreams as the internet can and will cost you money. However they do have some advantages such as being able to quickly look up a dream without turning on the computer, so if you are a real enthusiast you might want to get one anyway.

Online Synonyms Dictionary - Five Valuable Tips You Need to Know

Remember when we used thick, dusty reference books? Those days are gone - now we open our browsers and discover hundreds of online dictionaries, each offering different features and capabilities, leaving us confused!

An online English thesaurus, or an online English synonyms dictionary, is a great tool that helps us to find the most relevant words in our sentences, whether technical terms, "tip-of-our-tongues", or colorful usages that instantly transform our English writing.

By using synonyms, we enrich our English writing, rendering it professional and impressive, in turn transmitting to our readers how intelligent and creative we are. Using synonyms correctly in an otherwise humdrum essay, for example, can transform that text into a descriptive, clear, fun-to-read piece.

Numerous helpful solutions are out there in the internet; however, three components make an English synonyms dictionary valuable and effective. Make sure yours:

(1) Covers your field - Business, legal, medical, creative―whatever. Many thesauri provide only general, limited lists.

(2) It's auto-updated - An online thesaurus ensures that you use fresh terms―essential in our word-intensive world that keeps bringing new terms and phrases almost every day.

(3) Is intuitive and easy to use - Most dictionaries require you to type a word and only then they start searching for synonyms, make sure your solution enables you to click on a word within your existing text and instantly suggest replacements.

(4) It features auto-enrichment capabilities - Auto-enrichment means that the thesaurus automatically

analyzes your text and "understands" the context of each word, thus suggesting only the most suitable

synonyms.

(5) Provides additional English writing features - The more advanced dictionaries provide you with the following features as well: grammar check, automatic text enrichment, punctuation check, proofreading and online spell check.

The dictionaries for the Kindle are very useful. Many people have difficulty trying to figure out how to change the dictionary on the Kindle. The whole process is relatively easy on most Kindle models. The usual process entails purchasing the actual dictionary for the kindle, in the appropriate format, uploading it to the reading device, then selecting the settings and changing the dictionary from there. With the dictionary it's possible for you to learn words from a number of different languages, or even increase your vocabulary of your first language.

The Kindle eBook reader device is very handy for writers, people who love reading and translators. The Kindle device can be a very money preserving method of reading books while out and about, in a fashion that's both portable and stylish. Well, you probably think that books are already cost effective and portable. Which is true of course, but with this device you get something extra with the dictionary functions which can be used to translate text. As for the costs, the price of the Kindle in relation to the books is likely to surprise you. If you are someone who enjoys reading, then you are likely to save money, as the books will set you back at $9.99. There are even games that you can add to the device which will enhance the functionality of the device. Baby Names Dictionary - Discover a Great Tool For Helping to Name Your Baby!

As soon as you knew you were going to have a baby, you picked up a baby names dictionary. Am I right? It's one of the first things new parents do! The thought of naming your child can be both daunting and exciting, and a baby names dictionary can help you find the perfect title for your little one.

However, there are some things to remember as you search for a name to fall in love with in the pages of the baby names dictionary.

Consider each of the names you will give your child. Your surname is a given, but what about the first and middle names? They should sound appropriate when spoken together, look good when written on a page, and spell out initials that will not be a nasty surprise later. A name that spells out the words MAD or FAT will probably wind up getting your child teased mercilessly in school.

Say the names out loud. You need to know how your baby's name will sound! It might look beautiful on paper and have a very special meaning to you, but if the words don't flow together well, your child will likely wind up abbreviating the name or using a nickname instead - which makes the beautiful name you have chosen a moot point. Make sure you say it out loud, not only to yourself, but to others who will give you an objective opinion on whether or not it sounds appealing.

Watch your pronunciation. Some people believe that by giving their child a common name but a strange spelling, they are bestowing something unique enough to get noticed. But when you substitute one vowel for another or even swap consonants around, you could be setting yourself up for a pronunciation problem later on. Make sure your name choice is easily read by someone who is unfamiliar with it, and then ask them to pronounce the name to you. If the pronunciation is consistently wrong, then you probably need to go back to the drawing board.

Don't be enchanted by trendy names, or even by the most unusual name you find. While celebrities seem to love naming their children things that stand out, many of those young starlets later say they hate the names their parents gave them. Some go so far as to legally change those names! So make sure that what you choose will not be too unique for a child to handle.

There is a baby names dictionary for every kind of name, whether you are looking for something Irish or something that reflects an Aboriginal culture. When choosing a baby names dictionary, make certain that it contains a wide variety of name choices, includes those from different cultures or traditions, and includes detailed explanations of name meanings.

Naming your baby is one of the most exciting parts of your pregnancy. Take this time to find a good baby names dictionary and start searching for the baby name of your dreams!

The Modern Dictionary - The Popularity of Slang Terms is on the Rise

It is kind of difficult to ignore some of the words and lingo that can be heard being spoken by high school and college students these days. It seems that they have their own language that no one can understand and it may at times drive parents a little mad. Slang terms have become so popular among youth, that it is all most as if the English language is being rewritten again. It is time to throw out the old dictionary as it will not provide you with any clues about figuring out teen and young adult slang. What you need is a modern dictionary, one that will clue you in on all of the different slang terms that are being used and their exact meanings.

The use of slang terms has become so popular that UCLA has started publishing their own yearly slang dictionary called the Skrilla. While parents and those who do not understand slang language will be glad to get a hold of a copy of the Skrilla, young adults might not feel as empowered if their mom or dad got a hold of the Skrilla or any other slang dictionary.

One of the reasons why slang terms have become increasingly popular among the youth is that it gives them a way to communicate with each other where they can speak their mind but also leave the person overhearing the conversation wondering what in the world they are talking about. Teens and young adults can easily make fun of other people, talk about their boyfriends or girlfriends and use derogatory terms without anyone else finding out what the meaning of the words being used actually means.

Thinking about the Skrilla and other published slang books and websites takes me back to another day in time where the younger generation used what was called gibberish to talk to each other in front of adults or other people that they didn't want to know the full meaning of their conversation. Gibberish was frequently used by switching up vowels and consonants in the words or added sounds at the start or end of words to make them hard to understand when spoken.

When it comes down to it, slang words and terms have been around for decades, if not longer. The big difference and trend now however is that students, adolescents and even some adults are starting to make them public so that anyone can catch on to the lingo. In the end, this means that secretive words, slang and languages may not end up being that secretive after all.

Slang words are a growing niche and they will continue to multiply from generation to generation. To find out more on slang trends, visit http://www.theinternettimemachine.com.

I Wonder Why Dictionaries Went Out Of Fashion

More Tips For New Writers (Part IV)

When you begin writing for your home based business, never lose sight of the following facts:

1. People notice things (sometimes even the most minute detail)

2. People remember things (sometimes even the most minute detail)

3. People love to point out mistakes (sometimes even the most minute detail)

4. People will magnify even minute details.

Some people enjoy finding errors and pointing them out, even to the extent of writing books on the subject. Other people (and I admit to being one) can't help noticing errors and find them so horrific that they (inadvertently and quite without malice) magnify them out of all proportion.

When you write for the public, you are poking your head above the edge of the literary trench and inviting them to pierce your brain with critical bullets. It is only sensible to take proper precautions. The tin helmet is not a great fashion accessory but, in these circumstances, much preferable to a baseball cap.

I used to work for a lawyer who had a selection of favourite words and phrases which he would drop into correspondence or conversation in order to impress people. These beauties included the phrase "most busiest" (makes me grind my teeth), "at the end of the day" (yawn), "in essence" (used relentlessly to introduce any minor point) and "very unique" (why does a unique word have to be devalued in that way?).

The day arrived when he discovered "vociferously" and latched onto it as his new favourite word. After several trial outings, he obviously became comfortable with the "vociferously" and introduced "vociferous". Eventually he was managing to use one of them in every letter and conversation. He wrote to other lawyers informing them that he wanted to work vociferously to an early conclusion of the matter in hand. He told insurance companies that his clients' losses would have been smaller if those companies had worked vociferously. He wrote to clients assuring them of his most vociferous attention at all times.

I didn't understand why he thought it was a good idea for everybody to be shouting. When the awful truth dawned on me, I cringed: I realised that he didn't actually know the meaning of the word. I never did find out exactly what he thought it meant. I could hardly ask him. That would have led to a conversation I did not want to join in. How much good do you think it would do your career to impart to your boss the information that he appeared not know the meaning of a word he used on a daily basis? Trust me on this: promotion would not come into it.

You may call me old fashioned but I believe that professional people ought to have a reasonable level of education. At the very least they should know how to look words up in the dictionary before trotting them out for the delight of the general public.

Something, perhaps a combination of ignorance and arrogance, prevented this allegedly educated man from bothering to check on the meaning of this new word. It was, therefore, paraded about for all to admire. The use of the new favourite word escalated until no document was considered complete without it.

I was horrified and embarrassed. I squirmed, anticipating the day when another (better educated) lawyer or client would broach the subject of this inappropriate word. Fortunately, I moved on before the day arrived and hope that my association with this word abuser has been forgotten.

A very public example of this kind of thing occurred to Georgie Fame who was a song writer and singer (and still is) in the 1960's. Georgie Fame and his band, The Blue Flames, were very popular and, when they released a record, it was played all the time everywhere. This song was about the bank-robbing duo, Bonnie and Clyde, and included a verse about them stuffing their loot into a canvas bag. Unfortunately, when Georgie Fame wrote the words to the song, he got a word wrong. Instead of referring to a "burlap" bag, he used the word "dewlap". (In case you don't know, dewlap is the loose hanging bit of skin under the throat of oxen, dogs, turkeys, etc - you know the bit I mean.) I couldn't listen to that song without picturing the villains stuffing bank notes into a cow's mouth and that definitely ruined the dramatic impact for me.

This error did not go unnoticed by the rest of the world. Georgie Fame admitted in an interview that somebody had told him, before the song was recorded, that "dewlap" was not the right word but he brushed them off and didn't bother to check. Once the song had been recorded and released, it was too late to do anything about it. This failure to check (even after a warning) became about as public as a mistake can be. If nothing else, it proved that people do notice these things.

I don't know exactly why dictionaries went out of fashion but I'd bet money that it was due to pressure by the "don't be shackled by correctness, creativity is all that counts" brigade. I never understood why you can't be correct and creative at the same time but I'll stay at the bottom of the trench until that argument is over. My suggestion is that you become a closet dictionary user. It's still legal and completely harmless. If you fear discovery, you can cover your dictionary in brown paper or pretend you just keep it to prop the door open, or say it was a present from Granny. Whatever you do, use the dictionary if in doubt. If the idea of owning an actual paper dictionary makes you too nervous, you can find one online at http://www.thefreedictionary.com/. Never take a chance and assume you know the meaning of a word just from the context in which you hear it used.

The Catholic Bible Dictionary by Scott Hahn - A Book Review

The Catholic Bible Dictionary by Scott Hahn is the most up-to-date dictionary on Catholic biblical terms in over a generation. In a person's lifetime, so many things can change. This change is also evident in the study of church scripture and historical texts, and how these are interpreted and made understandable to a more modern audience.

Thus, this bible dictionary is an invaluable text for any catholic who takes his faith seriously and wants to understand it better. Catholics are familiar with the bible, its passages, and its meanings. However, this dictionary will open up a whole new world of information and enlightenment that breezing through the bible during school and listening to mass readings won't give you.

In the same way, this book will be an interesting and entertaining read even for non-Catholics who are simply curious about the faith.  The biblical facts and studies are all written in an easy to understand way, so that you don't have to familiar with the Catholic faith in order to appreciate this text. Who knows, some readers of this text may end up joining the faith as well.

On the other hand, for bible study students, this book can also be a reliable source of information, whether on the meaning of words, the historical implications and symbolisms of biblical events, and so on. There are so many so-called books and articles on the bible that are either incorrect or incomplete. Why settle for inferior sources when you can get this 100% correct and complete source on the Catholic bible?

And because this book is so reliable even members of the Catholic Church congregation could use this book, in case they need to make quick references about queries they may have regarding their homilies or research. After all, no one is so smart that he can memorize everything there is to know about the Catholic faith.

So whether you are a devout Catholic, a biblical scholar, a member of the Church hierarchy, or just someone curious about the faith, the Catholic Bible Dictionary by Scott Hahn can be your best source of information.

For more information, check other Catholic Bible Dictionary by Scott Hahn book reviews.

Interpreting Prophetic Dreams - Find Out Why You Should Never Use a Dream Dictionary

What is a Dream Dictionary? A Dream Dictionary is a collection of several "symbols" that people often place their trust in to analyze their dreams for them. Why shouldn't you use it? Because it is Bogus and unwise for you to do so.

The key to knowing how or when the events of a prophetic dream are going to personally affect your life is found simply looking at the dream from a third person's point of view. It isn't found by running online or to your closest book store to find a Dream Dictionary.

To arrive at the most accurate meaning of your dreams, you need to ask yourself a particular set of questions.

What were you doing in the dream?

Were you merely a bystander?

Did the main events of the dream directly involve you OR did it come about due to something you did in the Dream?

These are all some of the pertinent questions that if answered correctly will help bring you closer to the true meaning of your dreams.

So what is the lesson here?

The lesson is simple:

It is important you understand that in the land of Prophecies, any object or thing that you're personally or even vaguely familiar with can be used allegorically to pass on a particular message to you. Your responsibility, when you receive such symbolical prophetic dreams, is to RESIST the temptation to go seeking after Dream Dictionaries for guidance. They will not help you.

When you receive divine prophecies of the future, there is no man made lexicon that can guide you to interpret it. I can't stress this enough. To stubbornly believe there's a Dream Dictionary that can decode your dreams is to assume the angelic being responsible for giving you that dream in the first place conforms to the rules of man. This way of thinking is not only false, but also Blasphemous.

What you need to do from this point on is to begin familiarizing yourself with your Dreams. This way you'll be able to comprehend the language of the guardian spirit (yes, they do exist) that is communicating with you.

I'm emphasizing this because, a time from the future is coming when you will Need to refer to your dreams in order to "safely" tread forward in life. When God said in the biblical book of Acts 2:17-18 that he'll pour out his spirit on mankind in the last days, why do you think he's going to do that? To teach you how to bake cookies?

Mankind alone can not protect himself from the evils of the future...unless mankind can find a way to know of it in advance. Since the weather is all we as humans can predict, we desperately need our dreams to forecast that of which no other man-made technology can.

Despite the advancements science/technology has made up to this point, there remains one part of life that mankind does not have control over and that is the future. The sooner the harsh reality of this dawns on you, the better off you'll be.

When that time of future tribulation comes, and you're not prepared, you'll have only yourself to blame.

God Bless.

Making the Dictionary a Friend - Proper Use of the English Language

The English Dictionary

Everyone knows that grammar and spelling matters in school. But what about the real life? Does grammar really matter when you're trying to score a job? What about when you're just sending a formal letter to friends? Since you're reading this article, you probably have already guessed 'Yes'. And you guess right!

While everyone may not admit that proper language is a reason for selecting or tossing applicants, it really matters. Well-written work creates an impression. Misused language just goes to show that you're not qualified enough to take your work seriously, which can devastate your chances to getting the desired job.

The English language is vast in size and contains several words with the same meaning. However, choosing the best word is what really matters. For example, I could say that this article is really interesting. Or, I could say that this article is thought-provoking.

See what just happened there? Changing one word changes the whole impression of the statement. Learning how to use these "impressive" words is what this article is all about.

It can be really easy to just look up a word in a thesaurus and then pick the synonym that sounds the best. However, most of the time, the synonyms don't fit in the statement. Unless you really understand the meaning of the word you are plugging in, your document will probably contain mistakes from top to bottom!

Therefore, use a combination of reference books. This includes the thesaurus and the dictionary! Yes, the boring dictionary. But there's some good news, you don't have to pick up the old dusty books and search words, you can do everything electronically!

You can use this Dictionary Download [http://www.dictionarydownload.net] for instance, to get an electronic version of the Oxford Concise English Dictionary! There are also many downloads out there to get a great thesaurus! So next time you create a new document, take in account which words you use. The dictionary can be your best friend!

Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary is the Christian's Standard For Understanding the Founding Era

A man has accomplished much when he earns approval from Englishmen for his work, over the work of an Englishman. That is what Noah Webster was able to accomplish. The excellence of Noah Webster's work is the reason he surpassed Samuel Johnson as the premier lexicographer in world history. His commitment to applying a Christian worldview to every area of life is the reason for the excellence of his work.

Noah Webster was defining the characteristics in his life at the same time that America was being birthed. The events that take center stage always define the leaders who emerge in any time and place in history, no matter the course that they choose to travel. Noah Webster's dictionary incorporates the three main principles that defined Noah Webster's life activities. It manifests a Christian worldview, a Christian philosophy of government, and a distinctly Christian philosophy of education.

Mr. Webster saw, with the rise of a new form of government, which necessitated new modes of life, ideas, laws, and institutions, a need for new words, new uses and new standards for words. There was already emerging a great difference between American English and its predecessor in England. Noah understood that just as America had replaced the chains of British tyranny in her government, she must replace the corrupted standards of the British language.

What Noah Webster understood, that is lost on most Americans in the 21st century, is that every area of life and thought is influenced by the worldview that predominates in a society. British culture had long discarded Christianity as the standard for government and language. In his Master's thesis from Yale College, in 1781, he wrote, "This country must in some future time, be as distinguished by the superiority of her literary improvements, as she is already by the liberality of her civil and ecclesiastical constitutions."

A centerpiece of His lexicography was the principles that he advanced concerning change and immutability. He shifted "standard usage" from the literati to the common man. He recognized that authors and writers were more prone to increase the use of modish, capricious improprieties in language than the common man. This was especially true of the American common man, because he was nothing like the illiterate peasants of England. America's common man was well educated. He read a newspaper weekly, as well as the Bible, sermons, treatises on the Christian religion, ethics, geography, and history.

Four things lifted Noah Webster to preeminence as a lexicographer for his time. One, he surpassed Samuel Johnson, England's leading lexicographer, by 12,000 words with his dictionary, and that was after he eliminated about two thirds of the vulgar words of Johnson. Mr. Webster's selection of words set it apart from British English, in that his selection of words related to the distinctly Christian form of government, view of liberty, property, and the individual. Two, he believed that the etymology of all meanings could be found in one fundamental idea. Three, He maintained a high standard of purity in language. Lastly, He placed American authors, such as Washington, Adams et. al. on par with British authors.

The 1828 Webster Dictionary is a great source for understanding the founding era. His commitment to applying a Christian worldview to all areas of life are demonstrated throughout his writings. His writings on politics reveal his understanding of the Biblical model of republicanism. His text books unwrap his commitment to a distinctly Christian education. Finally, the 1828 Noah Webster Dictionary confirms his dedication to applying a Christian worldview to language.

It is the opinion of the staff at Christian Worldview of History and Culture that every Christian family should own a copy of the 1828 Noah Webster Dictionary. Therein you will find Biblical definitions applied to American English. The 1828 Noah Webster Dictionary is your source for understanding the writings of the founders, as they were in large part the standard for the use of language as Noah Webster recorded it.

Reverse Dictionary - Ever asked yourself "Whats the word for..."

I just happened to stumble on a pretty interesting tool today.

I was trying to find a word for "People that are behind the times" for my previous blog post. I did a couple of searches in Google without avail and eventually started scouring for a tool that did a reverse lookup on a word. A tool where I would give the definition, and it would give me some words that matched that definition. What I discovered was Onelook.com's Reverse Dictionary.

Reverse Dictionaries allow you to "Describe a concept" in order to find words that match that description.

Cool Stuff, especially for all of us non-harvard graduates.

What I find the most interesting though is all of the uses for this tool. It is actually a very smart search engine. You would be suprized the sort of answers you could get from asking a variety of questions. Here are some of potential applications that OneLook describes:

- Find a word, when you know its definition, [or a portion of the definition].

- Explore related concepts. Baseball, clouds, cities.

- Generate a list of words in some category. I.E. Large Birds, Green fruit, Canadian authors.

- Answer basic indentification questions. What is the capital of Vietnam, Who is big birds friend on Sesame Street. What is the longest River in the world

In actuality Onelook is indexing much more then just dictionaries to find these answers. They index encyclopedia's and other reference sites as well.

I dont know about you guys, but if I had a very large amount of money, I might consider trying to buy their technology. There are a lot of times I wish the major search engines could do some of the stuff that they are. Ask.com (askjeeves) does some of this, but you cant get lists from Ask, its usually websites that come up that require you to sift through several pages to find your answers.

For all of you content mongers out there, this sort of technology could feed some very interesting sites.

I would love to see some sort of API.

Essential Kanji is the Essential Japanese Kanji Dictionary

P.G. O'Neill's Essential Kanji is in my opinion the best Japanese kanji dictionary you can buy. It's had rave reviews since 1973, and there are good reasons why my copy of it is dirty and dog-eared.

In Essential Kanji, the boxes that show you the stroke order are nice and large. One of the biggest reasons to get a Japanese kanji dictionary in the first place is so you can write kanji. This kanji dictionary shows you how to write the kanji properly without having to squint. In China and Japan, people have actually been known to get into brawls over proper kanji stroke order. Who knows--maybe this book will save you a black eye or two!

The English meanings for the kanji are concise and make sense. A lot of my books have very vague, overly broad English definitions that leave me scratching my head, but that's not a concern here.

At the back of the book, there is also an alphabetized index of readings to characters. That means that if you know how a word is pronounced, you can find that word in the alphabetical list and then find the kanji that make up that word.

Also, the book is durable and just the right size. The makers of some kanji dictionaries try to be helpful by making a book that can slip into your pocket. The trouble with that is the contents of the book are also small, and the pages would smear or tear easily. Essential Kanji is the size of a standard paperback, and its pages can take some abuse without falling apart.

The only slight downside of the book is that it doesn't progress from the most useful kanji to the more obscure ones. The basic premise behind the book is that it starts out with the ones that are simpler to write and progresses to the more complicated. It succeeds in doing that, but sometimes the most common, basic kanji are actually hard to write, so you want to pick those up earlier on.

Essential Kanji would be a decent, if not fantastic curriculum by itself for kanji, but in terms of being a Japanese kanji dictionary to refer to, it is superb.

Philip Rozek invites you to get even more info on Essential Kanji by reading the full article at http://www.how-to-learn-japanese.com/japanese_kanji_dictionary.html You can try to guess the top 10 most butchered Japanese words in English, and more. He?ll also let you pick from his full array of tips on how to learn Japanese.

A Dictionary and Thesaurus: a Writer's Most Important Tools

A writer is sitting at his desk trying to work on an article that is due tomorrow. He knows what he wants to say, but he just can not seem to put it into words. He decides to pull out his trusty thesaurus to try to find the right words to convey his message. The writer finds some words that he thinks will fit perfectly into his article, but he is not sure, because they are outside his vocabulary. The writer consults his dictionary to make sure that the words he has found actually describe the meaning he is trying to convey. After consulting his most important tools, the writer completes his article, and is very happy with his finished product, and so is his editor.

A dictionary is a great tool for any writer's arsenal that can expand your vocabulary, and help you find the words that you need when you are writing. You definitely want to pull out your dictionary when you think that a word will fit in your writing, but you are not quite sure about the word's meaning. Also the dictionary can help you see different ways to use a word, or different meanings for the same word. You have to be careful sometimes, because many words have multiple meanings, and readers might be confused about the meaning of the word the writer was trying to use.

A thesaurus is another very important tool for every writer to have on hand when writing. A thesaurus gives synonyms for words, which means that it gives you a choice of multiple different words that have a very similar meaning to the word you looked up. This can be very helpful when you are trying to spice up your writing. Every writer can get stuck in a rut by using the same words in many of their pieces. A thesaurus will combat this by giving you a plethora of different words to use. Without using a thesaurus your writing will become very dull and redundant. With a dictionary and a thesaurus by your side, you should be able to accomplish any task.

Visit the Dictionary of Words and Thesaurus Online. You'll find our Dictionary and Thesaurus Online invaluable.

Homeschooling French As a Second Language - Using a Dictionary to Build Vocabulary

When you have access to a good quality, comprehensive, French-English dictionary, you open up a world of possibilities to your French as a Second Language students. Vocabulary building is an important part of language learning, and having a good dictionary makes it easy and fun.

What dictionary should you buy? I highly recommend investing in the biggest and best one you can afford. Small paperback and pocket dictionaries just don't have all the information you will need. A larger version, on the other hand, will contain conjugations, grammar, word histories, examples of world usage, and even sample letters and phrases to help you in conversation and composition.

Having a comprehensive dictionary allows you to build your French lessons based on other topics that you may be studying. If you are studying the continents of the world, for example, you can look them up and label them on your map in both French and English.

As you work through your history or science lessons, you can also do themed projects in French, such as booklets, posters, and oral presentations using the vocabulary of the specific areas you are working on. You might assign, for example, a poster on the mammals of North America. Your students can label their projects in English and French to double up on the learning potential.

One favorite project, when I taught my middle school classes, was always a restaurant menu. In our unit on food, students would make themed menus, designing colorful covers, inventing interesting restaurant names, and listing off the various meats, vegetables, beverages, and other foods they were learning about. Some students chose a sports theme, some a garden theme, etc. As a follow-up we would use the menus to act out a visit to the restaurant.

Having a comprehensive dictionary allows you to follow areas of interest to your children such as soccer, basketball, animals, cooking, etc. For a few years, I taught a group of homeschooled boys in my home once a week. One of our projects was learning about hockey equipment. I brought out my son's smelly hockey gear and spread it around my kitchen and we named each piece. Then the boys drew pictures of hockey players, labelling their equipment. It was great fun, and the boys were motivated because it was a topic they were interested in.

Are you planning your vegetable garden for next spring? Map out where you will plant your beans, tomatoes, etc. and label it in French. Do you feed the birds in your backyard? Make a checklist in French of birds that are common to your area and check off each bird as you see it. Are you making a fun dessert for the family? Find the recipe in French and see if it tastes just as good!

With a comprehensive French-English dictionary, you can make French a relevant and fun part of your homeschool curriculum.

If you are interested in adding French as a Second Language to your homeschool, or are looking for teaching aids for your French classroom, take advantage of the free resources available at http://nallenart.org/. How To Use A Thai Dictionary - Advice For Travellers

For a westerner, the simple act of buying a useful English-Thai dictionary is not as straightforward as you might think. Having lived in Thailand, I have known many travelers waste their money on dictionaries they cannot use effectively for one simple reason, if you cannot read Thai, the majority of English language dictionaries are not useful to you. Why? Because the Thai equivalent of an English word is written in Thai script and therefore not recognizable to a westerner. Consequently, you are unable to use the dictionary independently unless you have a Thai person in tow, who can read out the word for you. A simple fact, but one that is frequently overlooked until too late, when you have already handed over your money.

Of all the numerous English-Thai dictionaries on the market, there are only a handful that are practical, if you cannot actually read Thai. Be careful to find one that includes a phonetic transliteration too. In simple English this means a third element to the dictionary: English-Thai, Thai-English and an accurate and consistent transcription of Thai sounds for those of us unable to read the Thai alphabet. The same is true of course for other tonal languages like Vietnamese or Chinese, whose scripts are unrecognizable to a western eye.

To be able to say a Thai word correctly first you need the phonetic equivalent of a Thai word, in recognizable western characters. Secondly, you need consistent tone markings of some description to show you how to pronounce the word correctly, using the right Thai tone. Due to the tonal nature of the language (Thai has five tones, mid, low, high, falling and rising) you could be saying the correct word, but if you use the wrong tone, the word means something entirely different. Therefore the possibilities for faux pas are endless and must cause much amusement within the Thai community. Many is the time local Thais have looked at me agog when I have announced that I have 6 horses (rather than six dogs), as the Thai word maa is the same for both - just the tones are different.

e.g. The Thai word maa can mean horse, dog, or the verb to come, depending on the tone. e.g. maa hok tua (rising tone) - I have six dogs; maa hok tua (high tone) - I have six horses; khun mai maa (mid tone) - he didn't come.

The common word mai is used to form a question or make a negative, or alternatively can mean new, silk or mile. Complicated isn't it?

An even more dangerous one is glai, which can mean the exact opposite, near or far, depending on the tone! You could end up with a costly taxi ride, if you have asked the driver how far somewhere is, only to misunderstand his answer!

These are just a few of numerous examples.

For many westerners hearing the correct Thai tones often pose a problem, yet alone learning to pronounce them. In my experience the most successful at learning tonal languages are usually musicians, as they can "hear" the differences and are able to pick up the tones much quicker. It is perhaps easier for most of us to start by distinguishing between the high, low and mid tones more so than the others. However, after a while you do develop an ear for the language and it does become easier, trust me! But I am quite sure you will have some amusing stories to tell along the way!

Learning English With an Electric Dictionary

English is widely used around the world. It is not very difficult to learn, but the vocabulary of English is very large which contains more than hundreds of thousands of words. And it will be larger as time goes on. The commonly used words can reach four thousand to five thousand, while people who have had high education know more than ten thousand words. Even a native person can not remember such large vocabulary. Therefore, an electric dictionary is necessary for all the English speaker and English learner.

Unlike the oxford dictionary, electric dictionary is with small size and easy to be handled. When you are on the bus, the electric dictionary can be put in your pocket and take out to look for the words. This device not only can tell you how to spell the words, it also can give you the right pronunciation. Whether the British English or American English you want, this device can make you satisfied. So, when you are going to give a speech to so many people, you had better check the pronunciation of some complicated word to avoid making mistake.

This kind of device is flexible to use, for it has so many functions for you to choose. It provides some usage of the word, grammar and syntax; even you can learn the words by playing games on this device. Synonyms and antonym can also be easily found. After the introduction of the utilization and function of the electric dictionary, let us get to know some of its working principles.

The speech information is stored in the memory, which is in the digital signal form and can not be returned to the sound after the processing of central processing unit. In the circuit, the digital speech is firstly converted to simulation speech, and then the power amplifier enlarges the signal, driving the loudspeaker to be the sound. The circuit that converts the digital speech to the simulation speech is called digital-analog converter. The memory chips in the electric dictionary can be divided into three different kinds, namely masked read only memory, flash and static random access memory.

The functions of the three memory chips are different from each other. The masked read only memory stores the information which does not need revision, while the information needs revision is stored in the flash. The information which is rarely used is stored in the static random access memory. The related integrated circuit of this device is OTD10D6CW.

ESL Teacher Textbook Review - The Oxford Picture Dictionary

If you are an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher looking for the ultimate textbook to teach your students vocabulary, then you are going to love the Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual English). This textbook is perfect for any ESL student and any ESL teacher. It can be used by students of all levels, and contains important English words or vocabulary. We use this book at our ESL school, Hawaii Literacy's Drop In Center, because it can be used with any level of student. As long as the student has learned their basic ABCs and basics of English reading, they can learn from it effectively.

To understand the amazing adaptability of this ESL textbook, I will discuss a little more about how it is used in our school. The Drop-In Center is a free ESL school for the local immigrant community of Hawaii, hence student attendance is not consistent. Students are free to come and go and thus it is difficult to have a traditional lesson plan structure. In addition, since the school is mostly run by volunteers, there are often not enough ESL teachers to divide students into different levels.

The Oxford Picture Dictionary offers many advantages for us:

1) It has relevant vocabulary for all levels of students (you can check out the table of contents on Amazon.com).

2) Students and ESL teachers can begin on any page at any time (so new students will not feel like they are behind the class).

3) Pictures can be understood even if the student has a very minimal level of English.

4) All levels of students find the book useful and engaging.

5) The teacher's manual and workbooks are excellent and make teaching and learning much easier.

6) It is inexpensive for most students (about $17)

Of course, even with these many advantages, the book is a reference book...a picture dictionary. Therefore, in order to make it interesting to students, the ESL teacher will need to integrate it into an effective classroom experience.

For my class, I usually use the Teacher's Manual, which already has ready made sample dialogues, lists of sentences for dictation, discussion questions, related vocabulary and other suggested activities. I might throw in a quiz or two to help the students check their comprehension.

Then I have them go home and review the vocabulary on their own at ESL teacher http://www.eslteacherguide.blogspot.com, a blog I created with the corresponding video lessons. We have the students work on only one page of the book a week, so that they have the opportunity to go home and absorb the words effectively. Some of the other ESL teachers at our school integrate the vocabulary into their grammar practices, or into their own self-created activities. Whatever your classroom focus is or what methods you use, the Oxford Picture Dictionary is by far the best textbook for American English vocabulary building.

Dream Interpretation Dictionary

Dream interpretation is not a new pastime or a modern trend. Dream related skills such as dream recall or Dream Interpretation are rarely taught in our schools. There are many dream books, articles, scientific studies, and college courses however, that offer information about Dream Interpretation. The most popular reference material is a Dream Interpretation Dictionary.

A Dream Interpretation Dictionary can help you find the meaning of your dreams and assist you with dream interpretation, and there are many dream guides and dream interpretation dictionaries available that you can buy or pick up at your local Library. Dream interpretations however, should not be considered a replacement for any type of counseling, legal advice, or medical diagnosis.

The most important rule of dream interpretation is to remember that no two dreams are the same, and are always unique to the dreamer. Any two symbols usually have different personal meanings for different individuals.

People have been trying to interpret their dreams since the beginning of man. Some Native American tribes used them as a right of passage and inspiration to guide them. Dreams while sleeping in ancient Greek temples were used as guidance for healing the ill.

The ancient Egyptians recorded dreams as far back as 2000 B.C. and believed dreams were based on real events. Dreams aided in their practice of medicine, and solving problems with their personal problems. People would sleep in the Temples when they wanted help from their God, and after spending a night in the Temple, they would discuss their dreams with the Temple Priest.

We know dreams originate in the brain, but do not understand what the neurological cause is, and are not sure if the origin is in a specific part or multiple parts of the brain. It has been shown that dreams are strongly associated with REM sleep, which is the time our brain activity is most similar to when we are awake.

A generally agreed upon theory is there are multiple stages of sleep, and the average person spends between one and two hours dreaming each night. Dreams are not continual and can happen several times throughout the night. We dream about once every 90 minutes of sleep.

We do know there are 5 phases of sleep and that we dream in all of them. The first four are NREM (non-rem) sleep and the last stage is REM sleep. We can dream in all of them, but the most vivid are believed to be during our REM sleep.

The first NREM stage is the transition between being awake and falling to sleep.

During the second NREM stage your body is gradually shutting down and your brain waves are changing.

Between 30 to 45 minutes after falling asleep you enter stage three NREM sleep and what are called delta brain waves begin to develop.

At stage four NREM sleep you are in a deep sleep and you have the least brain activity.

Stage five is REM sleep, where your brain can be nearly as active as when you are awake. This is the stage where your eyes can flicker rapidly causing the Rapid Eye Movement (REM)

Using a Dream Interpretation Dictionary can open up the world of dream interpretation for you and help you understand your most complex dreams. Dreams can hold hidden information in them, and understanding your dreams can help you discover your true self.

Looking For a Great Free Dictionary Software?

Software has really taken off lately. There's a software to perform virtually any task, if you could imagine a task, there's probably a software for it, and a dictionary is no exception. A dictionary is an absolute necessity for certain people, writers for example, have embraced computers to perform their job (i.e. write!) as it is a lot more convenient than writing your content on a piece of paper. Researching with the Internet, editing your writing, etc. is a lot more efficient if you use a computer. Leaving aside writers, the average person would be curious to dissect a new word they come across, thus having a dictionary always available at your fingertips in your personal computer is a good idea.

I've tried several software apps, but I find the Sage's English Dictionary and Thesaurus to be a great solution to a dictionary software. It is a freeware product that consists of over 200000 definitions complete with synonyms, antonyms, etc. It features dozens of features from looking up items on the clipboard instantly, history for searched items so you can return back to any word you might have forgotten, words can be searched in real time 'as you type' and also has a speech tool for phonetic transcription among several other features.

This software works on XP and Vista operating systems. If you don't want to have a separate desktop application as a dictionary there are always enough web based tools that lets you perform the same function. Google has its very own tool to look up a word as well, you simply need to append 'define:' at the beginning of the word you need and search for it, you'd then be provided with 'definition based' results from various sites, there are plenty of dedicated dictionary and thesaurus websites available on-line too like thefreedictionary.com among several others.

How to Choose a Proper Chinese-English Dictionary

As a professional teacher of Mandarin Chinese, I recommend that every serious learner should spend decent time on basic knowledge of Chinese-English dictionary(CED) in order to learn faster and easier.

Why? Selecting?the right?Chinese-English dictionary is a lot harder than selecting a French-English dictionary, which you can do with your eyes closed.?There are far more CEDs and a CED plays a much greater role in learning than a French-English dictionary.

Here are the standards to choose a CED good enough for you to use for 5 years:

No. 1 Uses pinyin as the primary system for representing word pronunciation.

A CED without pinyin is simply not worth considering. The zhuyin (bopomofo) method which is used in Taiwan is going outdated.

No. 2 Lists both traditional and simplified characters.

Simplified characters have been in use in publication in mainland China for half a century. Traditional characters are used for thousands of years and are still being used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and all overseas Chinese communities. In mainland students are required to learn Classic Chinese in high school, in which traditional characters are widely used. The art of Chinese drawing and calligraphy are all embraced by traditional characters even today. Traditional characters are making a comeback.

Nol.3 List entries according to the pinyin spellings.

This feature enables you to find a Chinese word by its pronunciation. Supposing you hear a word in class or during a conversation or somewhere else, and want to look it up, it will be important to be able to look it up by its pronunciation.

No. 4 Both characters and pinyin are shown in English-to-Chinese translation.

Beginners are not likely to know how the Chinese word or phrase should be pronounced, this feature should spare the need to do a reverse lookup of the Chinese characters for pronunciation.

No. 5 find a character without knowing it's pronunciation.

It's must-have feature for learners to find a Chinese character without knowing how it's pronounced.

If you find a character you don't recognize while reading a book, you obviously don't know how it is pronounced and you'll need to?find the character in the traditional way, by determining the character's?main radical and number of strokes, an "admittedly painful" process.

The great news is, with an online CED or Electronic CED, you can write the character, the software recognizes the character you write and search in the database. The pain of old-fashioned process is gone.

Happy study

It's definitely necessary to give it decent time to learn the basics of Chinese-English dictionary, because the Chinese language is unique a proper Chinese-English dictionary plays a uniquely important role in learning.

The Oxford Dictionary Creation and The Future of Language

Have you ever read the encyclopedia? Well, I guess you are not a; know it all, after all? Have you ever read the dictionary? It seems like a boring thing to do but you really should read it, as it is quite good actually. In my life I have read two dictionaries; an abridged Oxford dictionary and a regular dictionary.

It is amazing how the language changes over the years in each society and in each new generation. If you ever want to read a book on the subject, then I recommend; "The Meaning of Everything; The story of the Oxford English Dictionary" by Simon Winchester.

What will the future of the English language be? Well, a lot of that depends on professors and scholars and what they consider words, as each year new words are added to the dictionary. But in the information age we have compound words that take on entirely new meanings. We also have industry professionals and consultants creating new words in their fields. Many words that are quite unique and in industry terminology and new industry buzzwords are not in the Oxford dictionary although as time marches on they may actually earn a spot.

But still, what will the future of language be with all this instant messaging and abbreviated words? Our language is evolving and changing whether the professors and Oxford scholars like it or not. Slang is becoming acceptable and hyphenated shortened words are also. Still authors who are popular often invent new words and they are readily accepted if the writer is recognized. The future of language is involving faster than ever before and perhaps you will think of this in 2006.

Doc Love's "The System - The Dating Dictionary" on Male Archetypes

If you study Doc Love's THE SYSTEM - THE DATING DICTIONARY, you will find that it describes four male archetypes:

Wimp
Macho Boy
Gentleman
GigoloAnd each archetype has such a unique description, which can make you wonder how men can be so different from each other! Well, a careful analysis reveals a certain pattern, which is what I will describe here.

A man's psychological attitude can be analysed in several dimensions/spectrums, and I will focus on two such dimensions for now:

The Sensitivity Dimension: You have a SENSITIVE guy on one end of this spectrum, and a CALLOUS guy on the other.
The Attachment Dimension: You have a FAWNER on one end of this spectrum, and a CHALLENGE on the other.Using this method of analysis, the archetypes can be summarised as follows:

A WIMP is a SENSITIVE FAWNER.
A MACHO BOY is a CALLOUS CHALLENGE.
A GENTLEMAN is a SENSITIVE CHALLENGE.
A GIGOLO is a CALLOUS FAWNER.Sometimes you meet a woman that tells you she wants a sensitive guy, and keeps complaining about what a nasty jerk her boyfriend is! All her friends know that she's with the wrong guy and tell her to break up. She also knows "intellectually" that she deserves better. But no matter how much she complains, she somehow cannot "get herself" to leave him!

And when she actually does encounter a sensitive guy, she is likely to cry on his shoulder and complain about her boyfriend for hours together. The sensitive guy keeps asking (or should I say "begging") her to give him just one chance! He promises to treat her like a princess and do anything to make her happy. The woman is touched and moved by his sincerity, but still finds that something is missing. She cannot really describe what it is...but somehow, she feels that she just can't respect him. She also doesn't feel "attracted" to him! She actually feels MORE attracted to the jerk she complains about!

And the next day you meet another woman, whose boyfriend is the sweetest guy in the world! He treats her with the utmost respect, frequently buys her gifts and flowers, tells her several times how much he loves her, forgives her for everything, puts up with her put-downs and is always ready to apologise whenever there is a conflict between them.

Her friends tell her that she has the best thing going for her, but she is somehow not happy with him! And no matter how hard he tries to please her, she always find something wrong with him and criticises him for it!

If you are a student of Doc Love's THE SYSTEM - THE DATING DICTIONARY, you can easily tell that the second woman's Interest Level in her boyfriend is very low. And it is very likely that she would soon dump him for someone else!

Now, I have heard these stories HUNDREDS of times over and over again! And I'm no longer amused by these things, as they have become too much of a chiche!

But it wouldn't surprise me if it gives you the following impressions:

Women are so stupid and illogical
Women hate guys that are nice to them
Women like guys that treat them like trashWell, nothing could be farther from the truth. And I'll tell you what the real truth is....

Macho Boys are attractive NOT because they are abusive jerks, but because they EXHIBIT challenge.
Wimps are repulsive NOT because they are nice to women, but because they LACK challenge.A woman that is good-looking but has a low self-esteem is drawn to Macho Boys. She harbours a subconscious belief that she does not deserve to be treated well, and the Macho Boy provides her the perfect validation for her beliefs. (He treats her like trash....but she definitely likes the sex eh?!)

And I have NEVER found a woman that feels "attracted" to Wimps at a primordial level! A Feminista that has a low self-esteem might stick around with a Wimp for a long time, but it's NOT because she is attracted to him. It's only because she's looking for someone to dominate and use like a punching bag....and the Wimp makes the perfect candidate for this kind of abuse. (Eventually even the Feminista would leave him for a tougher guy, but that's a different story.)

Doc Love's THE SYSTEM - THE DATING DICTIONARY teaches you how to strike a proper balance by becoming a GENTLEMAN that treats women well, but also displays CHALLENGE at the same time.

And women that are self-reliant and have a high self-esteem (the desirable women) are ALWAYS attracted to Gentlemen.

Hope you found this insightful.....Good luck in the Dating Jungle, my fellow Spartan!

Dictionaries and Synonyms

What you don't know about dictionaries can kill your writing

The idea of synonyms can trick you into using a "lightening bug" instead of calling down the "lightening" - As Mark Twain will explain in a moment.

A writer's resources should include a good dictionary, better yet, a shelf full of different ones. These books should be our best friends and one of our most important tools. But they have a few flaws that can lead a writer to a warped understanding of the nature of words.

One problem is that they specialize in associating the meaning of different words, rather than differentiating them.

Diction-aries were originally introduced in the 1700's in an attempt to standardize the pronunciation and spelling of words, hence the name "diction-ary". The suffix "ary" means "having to do with" and the word "diction" originally meant simply "word".

As time moved on the word "diction" took on two shades of meaning: one having to do with word selection and the other having to do with the pronunciation of words. Neither, you will notice, have anything to do with the meanings of words. But as time continued to move forward the purpose of dictionaries was expanded to include reporting the common meanings of words as used by writers.

Click the link below "Oxford English Dictionary" to read more about the wacky history of dictionaries.

The point is that dictionaries were created by men, not god, and they can be and often are wrong; and one of those cases is in the area of "synonyms".

Many definitions include a list of synonyms such as:

"Synonyms: propose, pose, propound, submit. The central meaning shared by these verbs is to present something for consideration or discussion: propose a solution to a problem; a situation posing many questions and problems; propound a theory; submitting a plan."

It's fine to talk about similarities but if you're going to do so then you should also talk about differences. No, we are not talking about antonyms (words that mean the opposite of each other). What the dictionary should be saying is, "these are the similarities and these are the differences between these words."

That would lead to a much better understanding.

Instead one could get the idea that dictionary publishers are trying to associate the language down to make is simpler.

Perhaps - if they can remove enough words from the language by calling them Synonyms - they believe they can solve the illiteracy problem.

One popular dictionary defined the word synonym this way:

Synonym, noun

A word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or other words in a language.
A word or an expression that serves as a figurative or symbolic substitute for another.
Biology. A scientific name of an organism or of a taxonomic group that has been superseded by another name at the same rank.
[Middle English sinonyme, from Old French synonyme, from Latin synnymum, from Greek sunnumon, from neuter of sunnumos, synonymous. See SYNONYMOUS.]

The word Synonymous literally means - same name. But since we are talking about words that are "different" having "different names" isn't it logical to assume that they have "different meanings".

It's just as important, if not more so, to focus on their "differences" rather than their "similarities".

If the "different" words didn't represent different concepts or ideas - why would they exist?

Is there any reason to have multiple sound symbols (a.k.a. words) that all stand for exactly the same thing?

I don't think so!

The definition of Synonyms should be changed to mean - "too stupid or lazy to differentiate the meanings of - the two or more words in question".

Many times the key differences in the meanings of words (even the same word with different definitions) have to do with "time" or "action".

Eskimos have about 100 words for "snow". But just try telling him that all these different words mean the same thing - he'd think you were nuts. Because he knows that those different words represent very different types of snow. And each type of snow demands different actions on his part.

His very survival depends on differentiating the types of snow, not associating them and certainly not calling them the same thing or "synonymous".

Mark Twain said, "The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter - it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning."- Letter to George Bainton, 10/15/1888

It doesn't sound like Mr. Twain believed in words "...having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word..."

Twain was noted for his careful selection of words; which might explain why he so often called down the lightening.

Online Oxford English Dictionary

The most popular and widely accepted dictionary all over the word is Oxford English dictionary. There were two editions of this earlier and the third one is about to launch. The head of the Oxford university press, Mr Nigel Portwood said that the third edition of the dictionary will only be in electronic form. The online version of the Oxford English Dictionary was a great success and this was the inspiration for them to publish the third edition electronically. The first edition of Oxford English Dictionary was printed in 1928 and in the year 1989 the second edition was printed.

There are many benefits for the online version. The online version is more economic. Usually the printed edition was sold for about nine hundred and ninety-five dollars and the online version is available for two hundred and ninety-five dollars. It is always easy to use your desktop or lap to check the word meaning rather than checking the big book with your hands. The space for keeping the book in your shelf can also be saved if you are subscribing the online version.

There are frequent updates provided to the online version which will not be available in the printed version. The printed version contains the meaning of the word, its usage in the history, the proper pronunciation and the etymology. About eighty lexicographers are working for the third edition of Oxford English dictionary. The revised entries will be updated to the online edition every three months. The Amazon has reported a great hike in the sales on online books. Therefore it is sure that the online dictionary will be accepted wholeheartedly by the language lovers. But still then there are many people who prefer to buy the printed version still sticking to the traditional way of reading. But during the time of power loss everyone will be thinking of having a printed edition of the books.

Why a Good Children's Dictionary is an Important Learning Tool

If you have a young children, then you will know the benefits of having a good children's dictionary to hand. A good dictionary will contain more than definitions to help young minds grow and learn new things. It needs to highlight how a word sounds, as well as what it means.

For children, this is important because knowing how to pronounce a word will give them more confidence to read out aloud and they will also be more likely to use the word in conversation as well as including it in their writing.

The pronunciation of a word should normally come directly after the word itself, in the dictionary. This pronunciation is written in symbols and whilst some of the symbols look like regular letters in the English alphabet, others do not.

It can take a bit of time getting used to deciphering these codes - you will have seen these yourself: one looks like an upside down e, another looks like an n with an extra long and curvy right-hand side and so on. There are also some symbols that look like normal letters but may have lines or dots above them or below them.

These characters can be a bit daunting when you first see them but if you get a good dictionary, such as Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, then you will see that it has a pronunciation key in the lower right-hand corner of every odd-numbered page. And if that doesn't provide enough information, it contains a multi-page guide to pronunciation that discusses the finer points of pronunciation and how it has evolved
over time.

Some dictionaries have loads of useful and not so useful information in the back of the book. Style guides for punctuation, capitalization, documentation of sources, and forms of address are useful to have. So are definitions of medical and scientific symbols.

In all, have a good children's dictionary at home and make your child feel comfortable and at ease with it. Show them how to look up the definitions of words, help them to sound out and pronounce words they have never used before, and get them accustomed to using the dictionary to refer to when writing stories or doing their homework. Even if they learn 1 new word a week, they will have learn 52 new words at the end of a year. Their vocabulary will be growing and as a direct result of this, their command of the English language will be excellent. All this, from using the dictionary as a tool to learning.

Analysis of Doc Love's The System - The Dating Dictionary

Doc Love (a.k.a. Thomas Hodges) is an internationally known dating and relationship coach for men. His knowledge and wisdom comes from having interviewed over 10,000 women during the last 35 years and posing fundamental questions on why a woman chooses to leave one guy and stay with another. He has also interviewed several men that are 'naturals' in this area and never have trouble getting and keeping women.

Doc Love's thorough analysis of information gathered from his interviews has culminated in 4 volumes of work:

THE SYSTEM - THE DATING DICTIONARY
MASTERY I
MASTERY II
MASTERY III

THE SYSTEM - THE DATING DICTIONARY is the basic course that sets the foundation for everything else. Once the student (whom Doc Love refers to as 'Spartan-In-Training') fully internalises it, he can move on to the advanced Mastery Series.

THE SYSTEM - THE DATING DICTIONARY covers some specific concepts and ingredients involved in the dynamics of any relationship. Some of them are as follows:

Interest Level: Just as Location is everything in the real estate business, a woman's Interest Level is everything in the dating game. Interest Level (IL in short) basically refers to how strongly she is attracted to you.

When her IL is high, she makes everything easy for you, does anything to make you happy and always finds a reason to be with you. On the other hand, when her IL is low, she starts to make some interesting excuses to avoid being with you. Interest Level is a dynamic factor and the man's actions will determine whether it rises up or falls down.

Challenge = How tough it is for the woman to win you over. If you just flip for an attractive woman, then you are a zero challenge for her, because she needs to do absolutely nothing to win you over! Instead, if you set your standards higher and expect not only physical attractiveness, but also proper respectful behaviour, honesty, integrity and a flexible attitude, then she needs to work a lot harder to win you over. In the latter case, you're displaying more challenge.

Confidence: This has two sub-components - Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem.

Self-Confidence = How strongly you believe in yourself. While it is possible to 'fake it until you make it', real confidence comes from product knowledge of life in general and women in particular.....and your demonstrated ability in the application of the same.

Self-Esteem = How much you value yourself. This is where it is important to say no to a woman from time to time, specially when you know that she is asking for something that would compromise your integrity. Women often do this to test you! But if you hold your ground during such occasions, her IL rises up. On the other hand, if you give in, her IL drops.

Control: This has three components - Patience, Self-Discipline and Self-Control (note that it does not refer to controlling the woman, which is actually impossible!)

The 3 C's mentioned above - Challenge, Confidence and Control - are the masculine steel traits that raise a woman's Interest Level. A man needs to practise all of them together to raise the woman's Interest Level. If her Interest Level drops, it is very likely that he is missing out on at least one of the 3 C's.

Once a woman's Interest Level rises over 95%, you are never wrong in her eyes! And that is where you need to be in order to have a happy relationship. However, there is also a set of masculine velvet traits that you need to practise in order to keep her Interest Level high. These are: Affection, Respect, Romance and Humour.

If you fail to practise these velvet traits, her Interest Level will drop.

Doc Love's THE SYSTEM - DATING DICTIONARY focusses more on long-term relationships than short-term flings. And in order to have a happy relationship that lasts for life, Doc Love teaches you that apart from gauging a woman's Interest Level, you also need to gauge her Attitude.

To be more precise, you date her Interest Level, but you marry her Attitude.

As far as a woman's attitude is concerned, she needs to have the following non-negotiables:

She must be self-reliant
She must have a high self-esteem
She must have a flexible nature
She must be a giver
She must have integrity, which in turn is comprised of loyalty, honesty and trustworthiness.

Note that it is possible for a woman to have a very high Interest Level in you; but if she has a lousy attitude then she will only end up lowering your interest level in her over the long haul. And this can make you miserable, specially if you get stuck in a loveless marriage.

Doc Love's THE SYSTEM - THE DATING DICTIONARY also teaches you that once a woman's IL goes below 50%, then it can never be brought back up. So the relationship is over for all practical purposes. However, while most men would leave a relationship when their IL drops below 50%, women usually wait until their IL drops below 40%, because of their nesting nature.

And it can take a long time....possibly more than 10-20 years for this to happen (i.e. for her Interest Level to fall from 49% to 39%). But during this period, you have almost zero chance of reviving her attraction for you. The relationship turns into a rut, and yes, you will have to put up with her incessant nagging, arguing, temper tantrums and disrespectful behaviour in general.

But once it goes below 40%, she has already built up enough resentment and hatred towards you that offsets the nesting factor...and consequently she becomes extremely vicious! This is when you hear about lots of men being falsely accused of rape, abuse or domestic violence and being sent to jail on false charges! I'm sure you must have come across at least one male friend of yours that went through this nasty ordeal. Quite a scary thing eh?!

So if you wish to avoid visiting a vicious anti-male family court; or shelling out truckloads of cash to divorce attorneys; or losing your hard-earned money and house to a vicious ex-wife; or losing custody of your children; or losing your sanity in general, you most definitely need to be equipped with superior knowledge of women and dating.
