This way of thinking is not only false, but also Blasphemous.

What you need to do from this point on is to begin familiarizing yourself with your Dreams. This way you'll be able to comprehend the language of the guardian spirit (yes, they do exist) that is communicating with you.

I'm emphasizing this because, a time from the future is coming when you will Need to refer to your dreams in order to "safely" tread forward in life. When God said in the biblical book of Acts 2:17-18 that he'll pour out his spirit on mankind in the last days, why do you think he's going to do that? To teach you how to bake cookies?

Mankind alone can not protect himself from the evils of the future...unless mankind can find a way to know of it in advance. Since the weather is all we as humans can predict, we desperately need our dreams to forecast that of which no other man-made technology can.

Despite the advancements science/technology has made up to this point, there remains one part of life that mankind does not have control over and that is the future. The sooner the harsh reality of this dawns on you, the better off you'll be.

When that time of future tribulation comes, and you're not prepared, you'll have only yourself to blame.

Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary is the Christian's Standard For Understanding the Founding Era

A man has accomplished much when he earns approval from Englishmen for his work, over the work of an Englishman. That is what Noah Webster was able to accomplish. The excellence of Noah Webster's work is the reason he surpassed Samuel Johnson as the premier lexicographer in world history. His commitment to applying a Christian worldview to every area of life is the reason for the excellence of his work.

Noah Webster was defining the characteristics in his life at the same time that America was being birthed. The events that take center stage always define the leaders who emerge in any time and place in history, no matter the course that they choose to travel. Noah Webster's dictionary incorporates the three main principles that defined Noah Webster's life activities. It manifests a Christian worldview, a Christian philosophy of government, and a distinctly Christian philosophy of education.

Mr. Webster saw, with the rise of a new form of government, which necessitated new modes of life, ideas, laws, and institutions, a need for new words, new uses and new standards for words. There was already emerging a great difference between American English and its predecessor in England. Noah understood that just as America had replaced the chains of British tyranny in her government, she must replace the corrupted standards of the British language.

British culture had long discarded Christianity as the standard for government and language. In his Master's thesis from Yale College, in 1781, he wrote, "This country must in some future time, be as distinguished by the superiority of her literary improvements, as she is already by the liberality of her civil and ecclesiastical constitutions."

A centerpiece of His lexicography was the principles that he advanced concerning change and immutability. He shifted "standard usage" from the literati to the common man. He recognized that authors and writers were more prone to increase the use of modish, capricious improprieties in language than the common man. This was especially true of the American common man, because he was nothing like the illiterate peasants of England. America's common man was well educated. He read a newspaper weekly, as well as the Bible, sermons, treatises on the Christian religion, ethics, geography, and history.

Four things lifted Noah Webster to preeminence as a lexicographer for his time. One, he surpassed Samuel Johnson, England's leading lexicographer, by 12,000 words with his dictionary, and that was after he eliminated about two thirds of the vulgar words of Johnson. Mr. Webster's selection of words set it apart from British English, in that his selection of words related to the distinctly Christian form of government, view of liberty, property, and the individual. Two, he believed that the etymology of all meanings could be found in one fundamental idea. Three, He maintained a high standard of purity in language. Lastly, He placed American authors, such as Washington, Adams et. al. on par with British authors.

Reverse Dictionary - Ever asked yourself "Whats the word for..."

I just happened to stumble on a pretty interesting tool today.

I was trying to find a word for "People that are behind the times" for my previous blog post. I did a couple of searches in Google without avail and eventually started scouring for a tool that did a reverse lookup on a word. A tool where I would give the definition, and it would give me some words that matched that definition. What I discovered was Onelook.com's Reverse Dictionary.

Reverse Dictionaries allow you to "Describe a concept" in order to find words that match that description.

Cool Stuff, especially for all of us non-harvard graduates.

What I find the most interesting though is all of the uses for this tool. It is actually a very smart search engine. You would be suprized the sort of answers you could get from asking a variety of questions. Here are some of potential applications that OneLook describes:

- Find a word, when you know its definition, [or a portion of the definition].

- Explore related concepts. Baseball, clouds, cities.

- Generate a list of words in some category. I.E. Large Birds, Green fruit, Canadian authors.

- Answer basic indentification questions. What is the capital of Vietnam, Who is big birds friend on Sesame Street. What is the longest River in the world

In actuality Onelook is indexing much more then just dictionaries to find these answers. They index encyclopedia's and other reference sites as well.

I dont know about you guys, but if I had a very large amount of money, I might consider trying to buy their technology. There are a lot of times I wish the major search engines could do some of the stuff that they are. Ask.com (askjeeves) does some of this, but you cant get lists from Ask, its usually websites that come up that require you to sift through several pages to find your answers.

For all of you content mongers out there, this sort of technology could feed some very interesting sites.

Essential Kanji is the Essential Japanese Kanji Dictionary

P.G. O'Neill's Essential Kanji is in my opinion the best Japanese kanji dictionary you can buy. It's had rave reviews since 1973, and there are good reasons why my copy of it is dirty and dog-eared.

In Essential Kanji, the boxes that show you the stroke order are nice and large. One of the biggest reasons to get a Japanese kanji dictionary in the first place is so you can write kanji. This kanji dictionary shows you how to write the kanji properly without having to squint. In China and Japan, people have actually been known to get into brawls over proper kanji stroke order. Who knows--maybe this book will save you a black eye or two!

The English meanings for the kanji are concise and make sense. A lot of my books have very vague, overly broad English definitions that leave me scratching my head, but that's not a concern here.

At the back of the book, there is also an alphabetized index of readings to characters. That means that if you know how a word is pronounced, you can find that word in the alphabetical list and then find the kanji that make up that word.

Also, the book is durable and just the right size. The makers of some kanji dictionaries try to be helpful by making a book that can slip into your pocket. The trouble with that is the contents of the book are also small, and the pages would smear or tear easily. Essential Kanji is the size of a standard paperback, and its pages can take some abuse without falling apart.

The only slight downside of the book is that it doesn't progress from the most useful kanji to the more obscure ones. The basic premise behind the book is that it starts out with the ones that are simpler to write and progresses to the more complicated. It succeeds in doing that, but sometimes the most common, basic kanji are actually hard to write, so you want to pick those up earlier on.

Essential Kanji would be a decent, if not fantastic curriculum by itself for kanji, but in terms of being a Japanese kanji dictionary to refer to, it is superb.

Homeschooling French As a Second Language - Using a Dictionary to Build Vocabulary

When you have access to a good quality, comprehensive, French-English dictionary, you open up a world of possibilities to your French as a Second Language students. Vocabulary building is an important part of language learning, and having a good dictionary makes it easy and fun.

What dictionary should you buy? I highly recommend investing in the biggest and best one you can afford. Small paperback and pocket dictionaries just don't have all the information you will need. A larger version, on the other hand, will contain conjugations, grammar, word histories, examples of world usage, and even sample letters and phrases to help you in conversation and composition.

Having a comprehensive dictionary allows you to build your French lessons based on other topics that you may be studying. If you are studying the continents of the world, for example, you can look them up and label them on your map in both French and English.

As you work through your history or science lessons, you can also do themed projects in French, such as booklets, posters, and oral presentations using the vocabulary of the specific areas you are working on. You might assign, for example, a poster on the mammals of North America. Your students can label their projects in English and French to double up on the learning potential.

One favorite project, when I taught my middle school classes, was always a restaurant menu. In our unit on food, students would make themed menus, designing colorful covers, inventing interesting restaurant names, and listing off the various meats, vegetables, beverages, and other foods they were learning about. Some students chose a sports theme, some a garden theme, etc. As a follow-up we would use the menus to act out a visit to the restaurant.

Having a comprehensive dictionary allows you to follow areas of interest to your children such as soccer, basketball, animals, cooking, etc. For a few years, I taught a group of homeschooled boys in my home once a week. One of our projects was learning about hockey equipment. I brought out my son's smelly hockey gear and spread it around my kitchen and we named each piece. Then the boys drew pictures of hockey players, labelling their equipment. It was great fun, and the boys were motivated because it was a topic they were interested in.

Are you planning your vegetable garden for next spring? Map out where you will plant your beans, tomatoes, etc. and label it in French. Do you feed the birds in your backyard? Make a checklist in French of birds that are common to your area and check off each bird as you see it. Are you making a fun dessert for the family? How To Use A Thai Dictionary - Advice For Travellers

For a westerner, the simple act of buying a useful English-Thai dictionary is not as straightforward as you might think. Having lived in Thailand, I have known many travelers waste their money on dictionaries they cannot use effectively for one simple reason, if you cannot read Thai, the majority of English language dictionaries are not useful to you. Why? Because the Thai equivalent of an English word is written in Thai script and therefore not recognizable to a westerner. Consequently, you are unable to use the dictionary independently unless you have a Thai person in tow, who can read out the word for you. A simple fact, but one that is frequently overlooked until too late, when you have already handed over your money.

Of all the numerous English-Thai dictionaries on the market, there are only a handful that are practical, if you cannot actually read Thai. Be careful to find one that includes a phonetic transliteration too. In simple English this means a third element to the dictionary: English-Thai, Thai-English and an accurate and consistent transcription of Thai sounds for those of us unable to read the Thai alphabet. The same is true of course for other tonal languages like Vietnamese or Chinese, whose scripts are unrecognizable to a western eye.

To be able to say a Thai word correctly first you need the phonetic equivalent of a Thai word, in recognizable western characters. Secondly, you need consistent tone markings of some description to show you how to pronounce the word correctly, using the right Thai tone. Due to the tonal nature of the language (Thai has five tones, mid, low, high, falling and rising) you could be saying the correct word, but if you use the wrong tone, the word means something entirely different. Therefore the possibilities for faux pas are endless and must cause much amusement within the Thai community. Many is the time local Thais have looked at me agog when I have announced that I have 6 horses (rather than six dogs), as the Thai word maa is the same for both - just the tones are different.

e.g. The Thai word maa can mean horse, dog, or the verb to come, depending on the tone. e.g. maa hok tua (rising tone) - I have six dogs; maa hok tua (high tone) - I have six horses; khun mai maa (mid tone) - he didn't come.

The common word mai is used to form a question or make a negative, or alternatively can mean new, silk or mile. Complicated isn't it?

An even more dangerous one is glai, which can mean the exact opposite, near or far, depending on the tone! You could end up with a costly taxi ride, if you have asked the driver how far somewhere is, only to misunderstand his answer!

These are just a few of numerous examples.

For many westerners hearing the correct Thai tones often pose a problem, yet alone learning to pronounce them. In my experience the most successful at learning tonal languages are usually musicians, as they can "hear" the differences and are able to pick up the tones much quicker. It is perhaps easier for most of us to start by distinguishing between the high, low and mid tones more so than the others. However, after a while you do develop an ear for the language and it does become easier, trust me! But I am quite sure you will have some amusing stories to tell along the way!

ESL Teacher Textbook Review - The Oxford Picture Dictionary

If you are an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher looking for the ultimate textbook to teach your students vocabulary, then you are going to love the Oxford Picture Dictionary (Monolingual English). This textbook is perfect for any ESL student and any ESL teacher. It can be used by students of all levels, and contains important English words or vocabulary. We use this book at our ESL school, Hawaii Literacy's Drop In Center, because it can be used with any level of student. The Drop-In Center is a free ESL school for the local immigrant community of Hawaii, hence student attendance is not consistent. In addition, since the school is mostly run by volunteers, there are often not enough ESL teachers to divide students into different levels.

For my class, I usually use the Teacher's Manual, which already has ready made sample dialogues, lists of sentences for dictation, discussion questions, related vocabulary and other suggested activities. I might throw in a quiz or two to help the students check their comprehension.

We have the students work on only one page of the book a week, so that they have the opportunity to go home and absorb the words effectively. A generally agreed upon theory is there are multiple stages of sleep, and the average person spends between one and two hours dreaming each night. Dreams are not continual and can happen several times throughout the night. We dream about once every 90 minutes of sleep.

We do know there are 5 phases of sleep and that we dream in all of them. The first four are NREM (non-rem) sleep and the last stage is REM sleep. We can dream in all of them, but the most vivid are believed to be during our REM sleep.

The first NREM stage is the transition between being awake and falling to sleep.

During the second NREM stage your body is gradually shutting down and your brain waves are changing.

Between 30 to 45 minutes after falling asleep you enter stage three NREM sleep and what are called delta brain waves begin to develop.

At stage four NREM sleep you are in a deep sleep and you have the least brain activity.

Stage five is REM sleep, where your brain can be nearly as active as when you are awake. This is the stage where your eyes can flicker rapidly causing the Rapid Eye Movement (REM)

If you don't want to have a separate desktop application as a dictionary there are always enough web based tools that lets you perform the same function. Google has its very own tool to look up a word as well, you simply need to append 'define:' at the beginning of the word you need and search for it, you'd then be provided with 'definition based' results from various sites, there are plenty of dedicated dictionary and thesaurus websites available on-line too like thefreedictionary.com among several others.

How to Choose a Proper Chinese-English Dictionary

As a professional teacher of Mandarin Chinese, I recommend that every serious learner should spend decent time on basic knowledge of Chinese-English dictionary(CED) in order to learn faster and easier.

Why? Selecting?the right?Chinese-English dictionary is a lot harder than selecting a French-English dictionary, which you can do with your eyes closed.?There are far more CEDs and a CED plays a much greater role in learning than a French-English dictionary.

Here are the standards to choose a CED good enough for you to use for 5 years:

No. 1 Uses pinyin as the primary system for representing word pronunciation.

A CED without pinyin is simply not worth considering. The zhuyin (bopomofo) method which is used in Taiwan is going outdated.

No. 2 Lists both traditional and simplified characters.

Simplified characters have been in use in publication in mainland China for half a century. Traditional characters are used for thousands of years and are still being used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and all overseas Chinese communities. In mainland students are required to learn Classic Chinese in high school, in which traditional characters are widely used. The art of Chinese drawing and calligraphy are all embraced by traditional characters even today. Traditional characters are making a comeback.

Nol.3 List entries according to the pinyin spellings.

This feature enables you to find a Chinese word by its pronunciation. Supposing you hear a word in class or during a conversation or somewhere else, and want to look it up, it will be important to be able to look it up by its pronunciation.

No. 4 Both characters and pinyin are shown in English-to-Chinese translation.

Beginners are not likely to know how the Chinese word or phrase should be pronounced, this feature should spare the need to do a reverse lookup of the Chinese characters for pronunciation.

No. 5 find a character without knowing it's pronunciation.
